The Best Explorer’s Journey from the equator to Norway
Giovanni Acquarone
«The charm of the Arctic is something that gets inside you and never leaves you. Subtle, elusive, but deep and persistent.»
After travelling the Northwest Passage in 2012, the Best Explorer resumes the ice route. In 2018 she was in New Guinea at the equator and has been sailing in the Pacific for five years. The crew of five friends, led by skipper Giovanni Acquarone, decides to return to Europe by completing the circumnavigation of the North Pole. From Osaka in Japan to Tromsø in Norway she undertakes an 8,000 miles (almost 15,000 kilometres) adventure crossing the historic Northeast Passage and then skirting northern Siberia. Ice and snow, armed sentries and friendly officials, endless sea and skies, polar bears and whales, an incredible feat told leg after leg like in a logbook and concluded after four months of sailing lived with trepidation, anxiety, joy and wonder that only sea and waves can provide.
Giovanni Acquarone (1942) comes from a family with ancient maritime roots. He sailed the Northwest Passage route with Best Explorer and, after spending six years in the Pacific, returned to his starting point in Norway via Siberia. He is the first Italian captain and the first and only person worldwide to have completed the Arctic voyage clockwise on a pleasure boat. In 2022, he was awarded the Premio Atlantide.
